The OGA or Other Government Agencies Platoon is the security element attached to the Australian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) – Uruzgan. The Other Government Agencies the title refers to include AusAID, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the American State Department and USAID.
The Platoon is a mixture of Infantry, Engineers and Cavalry and is designed to provide security, mobility and protection to the development and stability specialists who make up the civilian component of the PRT.
The OGA Platoon was recently tasked with escorting PRT members to Naychin, in the Miribad Valley; a rural community located ten kilometres northeast of the provincial capital, Tarin Kot.
The mission was to allow the PRT members to meet with the local community and to inspect an irrigation canal improvement project. The project has been initiated as part of the ongoing development in the province and the lengthening and widening of the watercourse will benefit the local farmers, who rely on their crops for both food and income.
Unfortunately, the project has also been a target for insurgents who have attacked the local workers and left Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the construction area. The Engineer component of the OGA was an essential element in searching the area for these indiscriminate weapons and allowing the inspection of the development to progress. The search and clearance of the area also ensured the safety of the local population.
