HMAS Ballarat conducted Exercise Nichi-Gou Trident 12, a bilateral exercise with the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force over the period 4-5 June and Pacific Bond 12, a trilateral exercise with the JMSDF and the USN over the period 6-7 June.
Nichi-Gou Trident also includes Japanese Defence Ship (JDS) Shimakaze (DDG), JDS Michishio (SSK) and JMSDF P-3C Orion aircraft from the 1st, 4th and 5th Air Wings.
Pacific Bond includes JDS Shimakaze, JDS Hamana (AOE), JMSDF P-3C from the 1st, 4th and 5th Air Wings, USS McCampbell (DDG), USS Hawaii (SSN) and a USN P-3C Orion.
The aim of both exercises is to develop interoperability between the two nations in naval operations, with a particular focus on anti-submarine warfare.
Since 1975 the Royal Australian Navy has conducted 35 visits to Japan.
